On April 5th, 1815, Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted in a series of explosions which could be heard over 2000 kilometres (1,200 miles) away, the biggest bang in recorded human history. The ejected ash was so much that it darkened the sky all over the world, and the following year, 1816, was called the "year without summer" because of it.
